exhibition: can you see me?
The world is complex and so are we; people with diverse backgrounds, beliefs, faiths, values, hurts and desires. There is so much more than one perspective and also so much more than one layer. Cities are the epicentre of this (cultural) complexity.
Can you see me? is my search for the aesthetic layering and poetry of cities and their inhabitants. Especially the density and super-diversity of cities like Berlin and Antwerp continue to fascinate and inspire me. Nowhere does the diverse din of people, languages, cultures, architecture... echo louder. Nowhere do complexity and beauty clash harder and together form a new aesthetic.
how beautiful can complexity be?
In this series of street photography, the focus is sometimes on the compositional nature of colours, sometimes on the poetry of a dirty train window. Both form a layer or detail of a bigger picture. In other images, it is the reflection of passers-by merging with a model on a billboard or urban architecture reflecting a reflection of its inhabitants back to its lens.
How beautiful can complex be? How do you tell about life in a city and the (reflected) individual story of its inhabitants and at the same time maintain the right distance and discretion? These questions were part of the basis of this photographic quest.
The photographs are not staged and image editing is limited to pure image development. Thus, they are not image montages made after the fact. The layered pictures are carefully observed and photographed moments of the complexity of everyday city life.
